History of Avondale, AZ

Avondale’s roots trace back to the west bank of the Agua Fria River. A freight station owned by Billy Moore operated near a well known for its clear, cold water. The Spanish term Agua Fria translates to cold water, which inspired early naming in the area.

Originally, a nearby ranch was known as Avondale Ranch. When the railroad expanded westward, a new train station was established and named Litchfield. After the local post office reopened following a six year closure, federal naming rules prevented reuse of the name Coldwater. The post office was renamed Avondale, and the community gradually adopted that name.

A pivotal moment occurred in 1942 when a major fire destroyed Riley’s Bar near present day Dysart Road and Western Avenue. Without an official fire department, residents worked together to prevent further destruction. This event accelerated the push for incorporation.

Avondale officially incorporated in December 1946. By July 22, 1947, the Avondale Fire Department was established, serving a growing population of more than 2,000 residents.
